Welcome Reception for Rev. Sarah Alexander

Please join us at a welcome reception for Rev. Sarah Alexander on Sunday, July 28 on the Plaza at 11:00 p.m.

Deacon Sarah Alexander joins our staff as the Director of Young Adult and High School Youth Ministries. Recently ordained a deacon at the Michigan Annual Conference in June 2019, Sarah is a gifted Christian educator with 12 years of experience in local church and conference-wide young people’s ministries, including developing and managing summer programs, supervising young adult staff, and connecting the called to their calling. She brings with her a passion for Wesleyan theology, young people’s vocational discernment, collaboration, and building the body of Christ.

Prior to her appointment at Birmingham First, Sarah served as the director for Motown Mission in Detroit since 2016 where she engaged 700+ Christian youth, college students, and adults annually who were interested in economic disaster recovery work in the name of Jesus Christ. Before her time with Motown Missions, Sarah served as the Director of Student Ministries and Communications at Newburg United Methodist Church in Livonia from 2007-2016. At Newburg, she provided leadership for a church-wide ministry that engaged 80 youth and young adults, including six gatherings each week led by 15 youth-leader volunteer teams.

Within our greater United Methodist connection, Sarah is currently a volunteer for Justice for Our Neighbors as well as a member of the Michigan Conference Worship Committee. Sarah and her husband, Matt, have been married for eight years. They moved from the Livonia area along with their 15-month-old daughter, Helen, and a nine-year-old beagle, Jelly. In her free time, Sarah enjoys gardening, reading, yoga, and the Detroit Tigers. Matt is currently studying at Lawrence Technological University and will be graduating in December with a Bachelor’s degree in sound engineering. He is an avid fan of music who likes to discover and review new music that others share with him. Matt also enjoys walking as well as board games and video games. Sarah describes Helen as “silly and determined.”

Deacon Sarah brings significant gifts to us in the areas of Young Adult and High School Youth Ministries that will be a great blessing to our current ministry team as we live into our FORWARD goals and initiatives.
