Refugee Resettlement

Refugee Resettlement

The Church and Society Committee at Birmingham First is sponsoring a refugee family through Samaritas.

A new Syrian refugee family moved into their home. We had a group of Birmingham First volunteers there to greet them and get acquainted.  The family is fasting for Ramadan so no welcoming meal was prepared. There are 4 members in the Al Farawati family: Hashem (Dad); Feryal (Mom): Ahmad (son) and Hashem (son).  The boys are 18 and 17.

They are a wonderful family and will be a joy to have with us for the next 6 months.  Here is what we know of their story.  Hashem owned a successful small clothing and children’s toy store in Syria.  Five years ago, Ahmad suffered an eye injury as a result of a bomb blast.  The family immediately fled Syria for Jordan.  The war in Syria has cost them the lives of 5 very close relatives.  They have lived in Jordon for the past 5 years waiting for the opportunity to start their new life in America.

Volunteer opportunities to provide a variety of support activities for and with our adopted refugee family are available. Many opportunities exist and can be one-time or recurring. Examples include driving, food shopping guides, tutors and social support. Please consider joining a team committed to open hearts, open minds, and welcoming spirits. To volunteer, please complete and return the Refugee Resettlement Volunteer Form.

We will also need between $25,000-$30,000 to support this effort. We already have $7,000 in hand. If you would like to contribute toward this opportunity to make real the love of Jesus to a family that has been forced to leave its country because of war and persecution, you may write a check to Birmingham First UMC or give online.
