Lent and Easter

An Invitation to Lent

Lent is the season of forty days in the life of the Church from Ash Wednesday until Easter, not including Sundays. The word “Lent” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” From some of the earliest days in the life of the Church, Lent has been the time to prepare new members for baptism and reception into the community of faith, to receive the penitent, and to renew our connection to God and one another as a people of faith. Like our journey towards spring at this time of the year, Lent represents our journey together to the new life that God offers us in our Easter resurrection celebrations.

I invite you to join me in observing a holy Lenten season as we grow in our relationships with God and one another through the spiritual practices of prayer, fasting, repentance, and self-reflection. Throughout this brochure, you will find opportunities to renew your connections with God and one another as we follow the passion of Jesus’ last week with us to the joy of Easter morning.

Amy-Jill Levine in her book, Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week, writes that Lent “gives Jesus’ followers time for rejoicing: there is always good news; there is a future that can be, that will be, better. We can read the story retrospectively, because we know the ending. The time is still open. The mission is ongoing. God is merciful.”

Entering into the passion of Jesus during this Lenten season, may we discover anew the joy, the hope, and the new life that is ours at Easter and always in Jesus Christ.

Blessings,

Elbert Dulworth
Senior Pastor
