Birmingham First and The Greater Detroit District invite you to
A Forum on the 2019 Special General Conference of the United Methodist Church
“The Church and Human Sexuality – Finding a Way Forward”

November 9, 2018
7-9 PM

Christian Life Center, Birmingham First
1589 W. Maple Road
Birmingham, MI 48009

The 2019 special session of the General Conference (GC) of the global United Methodist Church will be held in St. Louis, Missouri from February 23 -26.  The GC is the top policy-making body of the Church. The GC can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions, on current moral, social, and policy issues. The GC can also adopt changes to the governance structure of the worldwide Church. In short, what happens at the GC can directly and dramatically impact every local United Methodist Church including our very own. The GC deserves the attention of every United Methodist. The St. Louis special session of the GC will consider only matters pertaining to the church’s teachings, policies, and practices regarding homosexuality and the place for homosexuals in the church. These are divisive matters within the UMC and the GC delegates will seek a path forward that addresses our differences while holding us together as a worldwide connectional church.  The stakes could not be higher.

So, if you can’t make it to St. Louis in February, Birmingham First is offering the next best thing to being there. On November 9 from 7  to 9 p.m. in the Christian Life Center, join United Methodists from throughout our district for an informational forum on the 2019 General Conference (GC) – The Church and Human Sexuality – Finding a way Forward. The forum will offer discussions on the UMC history with issues related to human sexuality; why we are having a special GC session in 2019 focused on these issues; how the special session will proceed and what can we expect as possible outcomes; and what might those GC outcomes mean for the greater UMC and our own local church in terms of teachings, policies and practices.

Forum speakers will include our district superintendent Charles Boayue and several General Conference delegates from the Detroit Annual Conference. Unless you are St. Louis bound, please make a note to attend. If you have any questions or would like more information on the forum, please contact Frank Driscoll at 248.666.5021 or email Frank at
