Mixed Doubles

Mixed Doubles is a social group composed of folks from our late forties to early sixties. We are a "mixed" group of couples and singles.  We enjoy a "mix" of service and social programs.  Guests are welcome at all of our activities.

Past Activities

A (Habeas) Chorus Line - Saturday, October 29, 2005

Again this fall we enjoyed the satire of this local group of singing lawyers. After the show, we adjourned to the home of Mary Pickett and Rich Teets for coffee, dessert, and a chance to get caught up on our friends' activities.

Dessert and Fellowship with Jack and Judy Harnish - Sunday, October 23, 2005

Jeanne and Glenn Moore hosted a wonderful evening of fellowship with Jack and Judy Harnish as our guests. We enjoyed getting to know Jack and Judy better and discussing with them our hopes and dreams for our church.

Road Rally - Saturday, September 17, 2005

This challenging evening was coordinated by Sue and Russ Ives, Doug and Donna Feldmaier, and Jan Mistele. The winner of the Road Rally was the car with Dick and Cyndi Cummings and Ralph and Andrea Wampler. Their prize? They get to plan the rally for next year!

South Oakland Shelter - Sunday, August 29, 2005

In another annual tradition, Mixed Doubles provided dinner for South Oakland Shelter the first evening they were at our church this year. Members of Mixed Doubles provided and served the dinner to 30 guests and all of the volunteers at the church that evening.

Ice Cream Social - Friday, August 12, 2005

As has become an annual tradition, Mixed Doubles provided part of the clean-up crew after the Ice Cream Social, with our work coordinated by Mark and Ruth Theobald. The profits from the ice cream social this year were for the benefit of our Youth Missions projects.

Ice Cream and Fireworks - July 3, 2005

Page and Mike Gorman once again invited us to their home for an ice cream party, then we walked over to Seaholm high school to watch the Birmingham fireworks. It was a delightful way to celebrate our nation's Independence Day.

Theater Night - May 7, 2005

Barbara Timm was the coordinator for our Theater Night on Saturday, May 7, when eight of us saw Jeff Daniel's comedy Escanaba in da Moonlight at the Ridgedale Players Theater in Troy. Before the show, we had a delicious dinner at Kim's restaurant near the playhouse.

Restaurant Night - April 9, 2005

Five couples met at Elie's restaurant in Birmingham for a wonderful meal of Lebanese specialties. We then adjourned to Mary and Rich's home to enjoy coffee and dessert and to continue our evening of warm fellowship and laughter. (A German goose in a Lebanese restaurant?)

Hunger Table - March 13, 2005

Did you know Mixed Doubles was one of the top Hunger Table revenue generators last year? Mixed Doubles again baked up a storm to provide goodies for the Hunger Ministry home foods table, then provided volunteers to sell the goodies between worship services. Cyndi Cummings was in charge of this effort.

Games Night - February 19, 2005

Margaret and Herb Suter again opened their home to us for Games Night. A small but congenial group enjoyed an evening of games and conversation.

Twelfth Night Dinner - January 8, 2005

As is our tradition, we rounded out our celebration of the Christmas season with a Twelfth Night Dinner, an evening of wonderful food and warm friendships at the home of Sue and Russ Ives.

A (Habeas) Chorus Line - Saturday, October 16, 2004

Nine of us again enjoyed a lively evening with A (Habeas) Chorus Line, a group which specializes in an irreverent look at a wide range of political, legal, and current events targets. After the show, we adjourned to the Dearborn Inn for coffee, dessert, and a chance to chat. Mary Pickett and Rich Teets were the organizers for this event.

Snacks and Dessert, Games and Swimming - Saturday, September 25, 2004

Summer may be over, but we still had a delightful evening enjoying fellowship and snacks beside the Heldreth's indoor pool.

Dinner for the South Oakland Shelter - Monday, August 16, 2004

Mixed Doubles hosted a dinner for the South Oakland Shelter group on Monday of the week they spend at our church. The lasagna dinner which Mary Pickett organized was enjoyed by the SOS residents and also by the volunteers working at the church that evening. It was another very satisfying service project.

Ice Cream Social - Friday, August 13, 2004

Several couples from Mixed Doubles enjoyed ice cream and cake and then had a chance to work it off by helping pick up after the Ice Cream Social. The Theobalds organized the team and it took less than an hour to clear and stow the tables and chairs after the band packed up their instruments and the crowds thinned. The profits from the ice cream social this year were for the benefit of our Habitat for Humanity Circle of Faith house, so we enjoyed the evening even more knowing that we were supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Pig Roast - Wednesday, July 14, 2004

Although the annual church Pig Roast was not an official Mixed Doubles event, our very own Poo-Bah Ruth Ann Heldreth was one of the hostesses and there were lots of Mixed Doubles folks at the dinner. Even the downpour several hours before dinner couldn't dampen spirits - dining in the CLC was lots of fun.

Fireworks - Saturday, July 3, 2004

The Gormans once again hosted the fireworks party. We had ice cream at 7:30 p.m. at the Gorman's, giving us a chance to see the new addition to their house. Then we watched the fireworks from the Seaholm baseball field.

Judy Collins Tailgate Party - Monday, June 13, 2004

The old-fashioned "tailgate" party prior to the Judy Collins concert was a good time with great food. As always, Herb and Margaret did a wonderful job of coordinating and cooking.

Restaurant Night - Saturday, May 8, 2004

Mixed Doubles continued our fine tradition of eating out with a restaurant night on May 8th. The Moores arranged a delightful evening dining at Hogan's Restaurant in Bloomfield Hills.

Theater Night - Saturday, March 20, 2004

Ten of us enjoyed going to St. Dunstan's Theater in Bloomfield Hills to see Vast Difference, written by Michigan's own renowned playwright and actor Jeff Daniels. Not only is this both a madcap story and a poignant one, but it is also filled with familiar references to the Motor City. After the play, we enjoyed a gourmet dessert at the home of Barbara and Roger Timm.

Hunger Table - Sunday, March 14, 2004

As our first service project of the year, Mixed Doubles sponsored the Hunger Ministry home foods table, providing baked goods and then selling them before and after each morning worship service.

Games Night - February 21, 2004

Margaret and Herb Suter again opened their home to us for Games Night. Sixteen people enjoyed playing Scatergories, Tribond, and Movie Trivial Pursuit as well as enjoying getting caught up on the activities of folks they hadn't seen for a while.

Twelfth Night Dinner - January 10, 2004

More than 30 people rounded out their celebration of the Christmas season with a Twelfth Night Dinner, where we shared wonderful food and warm friendships, donated gloves to Cass Community Church and Baldwin United Methodist Church, and exchanged some crazy white elephant gifts.
