Sanctuary Renovations and Organ Replacement: Photos May 10 - 14, 2005 - Part 3

In addition to our Genie lift, Schoenstein also employs an manual hannd-cranked lift to raise organ components into place in the various chambers. This is the 3rd wind chest going into the east chamber.

The connecting wires for the magnets which open and close each pipe's air hole.

Various 12", 10" and 6" PVC wind line components.

Organ installers must work in confined spaces!!.

The wind line in the frontal east wind chest connecting an air regulator to a "schwimmer" (which is another device for assuring an even and consistent air flow to the pipes).

The wind line coming through the west wall of the chancel crawl space, then through the chancel crawl space itself, then through the north wall of the chancel crawl space into the crawl space under the altar and then up to the wind chest on the west side of the altar.

3 more holes in the west chancel crawl space wall for 3 more wind lines!!.

Installation of the racks for the display pipes that will front the organ chamber of the east side of the altar.

Same for the west side of the altar..

The railings required by Birmingham city building code for the steps from the sanctuary to the chancel. The railings have been "primed."

A decorative cover plate is placed on each upright element of the railing and then a 4 hole attaching flange is welded to the base of each upright piece .

Drilling 4 holes into the limestone step or slate floor for each of 3 attaching flanges on each of the 2 railings. A flush mounted lead sleeve or anchor is then inserted into each hole and the attaching screws are screwed through the mounting holes in the flange into the anchors.

The newly constructed lectern arrives Friday morning, May 13.

This new lectern contains two (2) self-storing foldout platforms with an individual height of approximately 6" or combined height of of 12". As we like to say, the lectern is "Lynn Hasley equipped."

The sanctuary at about 4 p.m., Friday, May 13.
