Overview of the Sanctuary Renovation Project

Jesus

The overall objective of the sanctuary renovation project is to make the space more flexible and to provide an ambiance for greater worship experiences. To accomplish this, a number of changes will be made to the chancel, sanctuary, and narthex during the project.

Chancel

  • Raise the chancel floor to improve sight lines and provide space flexibility.
  • Widen and lengthen the steps in front of the chancel to accommodate large groups using the steps as risers.
  • Provide removable chairs and risers for the choir. Also provide removable pulpit, lectern, and modesty panels. This will provide great flexibility in the arrangement of the chancel for a variety of programs in addition to Sunday morning worship.
  • Provide electronic sound enhancement.
  • Install new chancel walls and organ chamber casework.
  • Install hard surface flooring material in the chancel.
  • Provide a concrete floor for the crawl space under the chancel.
  • Install the new Schoenstein Organ. This organ will have 48 ranks (2928 pipes) with 39 voices. It will also have a moveable console. It is a modern instrument with more exposed pipes than our old organ. The warm, rich sounds it provides will be more expressive and romantic with greater loud/soft variations than our old organ provided.

Sanctuary

  • Paint the interior.
  • Rewire and relamp the existing chandeliers.
  • Add lighting in the ceiling.
  • Provide electronic sound enhancement.
  • Refinish the pews, keeping the current cushions.
  • Recarpet the center and side aisles.
  • Provide removable modesty panels.
  • Provide sheet flooring under the pews for easier maintenance.
  • Install a new, quieter, improved HVAC system.

Narthex

  • Extend electronic sound enhancement to this area.
  • Replace the current wall between the sanctuary and the narthex with a flexible oak wood folding wall system incorporating the glass windows from the current wall into the panels of the folding wall.
  • Install new lighting fixtures.
  • Install new carpet.
  • Paint the ceiling and walls.

Chancel Arrangements

The following diagrams show some of the arrangements possible with the flexible new design of the chancel.

Narthex Folding Wall

To permit people seated in the narthex to participate more fully in the worship service, the current wall between the sanctuary and the narthex will be replaced by a flexible oak wood folding wall system incorporating the glass windows from the current wall into the panels of the new folding wall.
