Remembrances
About
the second time Jean and I attended our church, Dick and Libby Sneed
greeted us after the service and welcomed us to First Church. I
still see them crossing the sanctuary to get to where we were seated.
When
the congregation took the vote to build the present church, everyone
felt elated, but in those days, there was no clapping or cheering
in the sanctuary. So Dr. Runkel called for a hymn. I don't recall
which one it was, but it was a rouser.
Another
memory concerns the first Sunday in our new church. I was stationed
at the west door, near the chapel, to help people find their way.
In those days, I was a new boy, as I had not been a member for long.
The first person who came through the door was hailed with: "Can
I help you?" The reply was something to the effect that: "I've
been a member of this church for XX years and I built this church,
so I don't need your help!"
