Holy Communion

The Sacrament of Holy Communion is the celebration of the relationship United Methodists and almost all Christians share with the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. On the night before Jesus died he said, "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood poured out for you." The simple act of eating bread and drinking grape juice allows us to share in His life and connects us to the love and power of God.
At First Church the sharing of the holy meal is known as Communion, Holy Communion, "the Sacrament," or the Lord's Supper and is served in the pews and by intinction. When Holy Communion is served in the pews, the bread and cup (the elements) are passed among the congregation on trays which contain cups and small pieces of bread. When communion is served by intinction, members of the congregation move to the front of our church and pass by stations of servers who give the bread to each communicant to dip in the cup held by another server. There is a continuous serving until all who wish to partake have come.
As United Methodists we celebrate open communion, meaning that all persons who come by faith in Christ are welcome at the table. Gluten-free elements are now available at our Sunday morning communion services. At our church, the Lord's Supper is offered at a variety of times.
- Holy Communion is served by intinction at all services on the first Sunday of each month.
- Holy Communion is served at all four services on World Communion Sunday (usually the first Sunday in October), celebrating the gathering of the global church at the table.
- Holy Communion is served at three of the five Christmas Eve services. At 7:00 p.m., the elements are passed through the pews. At 2:00 and 11:00 p.m., the sacrament is served by intinction.
- Holy Communion is served at worship services on Maundy Thursday via the all-church table setting that is unique to our congregation. This setting offers larger cups of juice along with a roll (for the breaking), both of which are passed through the pews.
- Holy Communion is served on Ash Wednesday at 14 consecutive services from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. The 8:00 p.m. service is led by our youth. Intinction is the chosen method of serving.
- Holy Communion is served at brief morning worship services on the Wednesday mornings in Advent and Lent, held from 7:40-8:15 a.m. in the sanctuary.
- Holy Communion is occasionally offered at weddings (either to the bride and groom or to the whole congregation). This is an option that is made available on request.
