Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Pentecost is the great celebration of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church around the world, "from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages." (Rev. 7:9) The name comes from the ancient Jewish festival, meaning "fifty days"—fifty days after the feast of Passover. Therefore, the actual "Day of Pentecost" moves with the date of Easter. The season lasts until the first Sunday of Advent. Our tradition has been to celebrate the season on the first Sunday in June with the wearing of red and a birthday cake!
As we share the season together, we witness to our oneness with all Christians, "one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of us all who is above al land in al land through all." Happy Birthday to the Church!
