IXOYC Choir
First of all, how do you pronounce "IXOYC"? IKTHUS. It's Greek. It's the Greek word for fish. Why fish? Aren't we all fishers? Besides, in ancient Greece, you could use the IXOYC letters to stand for "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior." In the early church, Christians would scratch out the outline of a fish in the sand. Another Christian would then know the person who made the fish outline was also a Christian. The fish would be rubbed away so that both people could avoid persecution for their beliefs. In today's High School environment, being a young Christian may involve some cost just as it did in the early days of our faith.

One of the ways a youth in High School (Grades 9-12) can serve God and the Church is by singing in choir. The Music Ministry of our church provides instruction to this age group that stresses music, worship, teamwork, responsibility, and service. The goal of this choir is to develop singing abilities, develop music reading skills, give exposure to many different styles of music, and challenge your spiritual awareness through worship. Four-part singing, challenging music from different historical periods, a variety of styles of contemporary music, musical drama and travel are hallmarks of this choir. The only admission requirement is a willingness to try your best.

Singers should keep in mind that, unlike most other organizations, singing in choir is our offering to God. Even though there are "performance" aspects to choir, it is first and foremost service to the church. IXOYC Choir is a challenge. It's not for everybody. It take commitment, dedication, risk, and faith. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it.

This choir practices on Sunday evenings from 5:30pm - 6:30pm from Labor Day through Memorial
Day, excluding Birmingham Public School holidays.

The IXOYC Choir sings once every two to three weeks at one of the four Sunday Worship services. The choir also leads in one of the Christmas Eve services, presents a musical drama in the spring, and every summer has a week long camping experience. Every four years, the choir embarks on a two-week trip to England.

Please contact the Music Ministry Staff if you would like more information about joining the IXOYC choir.
