Volunteers in Mission
|
 |
|
Our church participates very actively in Volunteers in Mission, with members of our church volunteering their time to travel to locations where they can be in mission to those in need. |
International trips
Over the past 7 years, 120 volunteers from our church have spent more than 1500 person-days doing volunteer work on Volunteers in Mission (VIM) trips outside the United States.
- Chile - For several years, VIM teams have provided assistance in building the Chapel and Library additions to the Kusayapu Agricultural Institute in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Visit the Chile Mission page for details.
- Costa Rica - For the past 7 years, VIM teams have been working with Costa Ricans constructing and upgrading school and church buildings as well as a produce processing plant. We have also provided funds for supplies for these buildings, for school uniforms, and for school books. Visit the Costa Rica Mission page for details.
- Czech Republic - For the past several years, VIM teams have been working with the Nove Mesto "Central" Methodist Church in downtown Prague to upgrade their church and help center both indoors and out. Visit the Czech Initiative page for details.
- In April 2005, a VIM team of five people from our church traveled to Zambia to visit the our missionaries John and Kendra Enright and the Kafakumba Training Center. The study group sought to better understand the needs at Kafakumba and nearby villages and to discuss how our church can best engage in a long-term relationship with the Enrights and their work.
Trips within the United States
- Red Bird - Over the past 5 years, a group of 6 dedicated adults have spent more than 350 person-days on missions trips in Appalachia doing on-campus and community construction projects. Visit the Red Bird page for details.
- Youth trips. In addition to the adult trips mentioned above, our youth take several mission trips each year. For instance, over a period of 5 years, 146 youth volunteers from our church spent more than 700 person-days on missions trips to the Service Over Self project in Memphis. Visit the High School Mission and Outreach and Middle School Mission and Outreach for a list of current trip. (Organized by the Youth Ministry)
Funding
Travel expenses for these trips are paid by the volunteers themselves.
Some project expenses (such as construction materials) are paid for with your contributions made specifically to our church's Partners in Mission fund - a separate line on your offering envelope.

Volunteers in Mission began when Jesus, finding Simon and Andrew beside Lake Galilee, said, "Follow me and I will teach you to catch people."
Persons have answered Jesus' call to mission ever since. In the 1960's, members of local churches began to go - individually and in teams - to serve as short term volunteers in the US and overseas. Giving money to mission causes was not enough: they wanted to be short-term volunteer missionaries and to serve at a point of great need. Today, tens of thousands of United Methodists each year serve as Volunteers in Mission. Most serve from one to two weeks, but some serve for a year or more. Persons serve, in almost all cases, at their own expense. Most teams contribute to the cost of materials for construction projects, too.
VIM is the people of God in Christian mission. Scripture never limits the call to discipleship to a few. Jesus calls everyone to take up the cross and follow him. When he fed the multitude, Jesus called those around him to bring fish and loaves, to give and serve, as they were able. So also, the VIM movement is the whole body of Christ (I Corinthians 12) in mission.
