March, 1998: Two Birmingham Members Go To Haiti With Detroit Conference VIM Team
Birmingham First members Jim Miller and Harold Stanton went with four other Detroit Conference team members on a two week Volunteers in Mission work trip to Haiti on March 25, 1998. The mission was to work on completing a Methodist church in a small rural community of Ti-Madelen near Jeremie Haiti.
In two weeks we finished the cement block walls which had been started by another group previous to our arrival. The next step will be to put the hand hewn rafters in place to hold the metal roof. This will be done by the local church members.

A Methodist School - 4 classrooms with about 30 students in each classroom. Another building with one large room housed 4 upper grades.

The hot lunch program cooked over a woodburning fire. This program is supported by the United Methodist Church of Michigan. >

Much time was spent building crude scaffolding to enable the workers to lay the block walls. Virginia Bell, Harold Stanton and Jack Bell are pictured in the foreground . Vilaire, our Haitian foreman, is on the ladder. >

A typical rural home - 3 rooms and a porch with the kitchen outside the back door. >
