1998 Mission

Our church is part of a continuing mission in Tonjibe, an Indian village in the North Central region of Costa Rica. Members of our church spent time in February 1998 on a mission to Tonjibe.

You Can Help!

We are looking for people who are interested in supporting this mission team which will continue in its efforts for years to come. This endeavor will be an on-going mission from Birmingham First and will need much support and backing here at home, as well as members to go on the trip.

We anticipate that the building project will cost about $12,000.

Facts About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a Central American democracy located south of Nicaragua and to the north of Panama. It is about one-third the size of the state of Michigan, with a population of about 3.6 million people.

The constitution of 1949 abolished the military and established free health care and mandatory public education through the sixth grade, making Costa Rica the country with the highest literacy rate among the Spanish speaking countries.

An Open Letter to Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Birmingham First congregation for their wonderful support of this year's Volunteer in Mission trip to Costa Rica. Your generous support allowed us to complete our goal of adding a schoolroom and teacher to the one room schoolhouse in the Indian village of Tonjibe, Costa Rica. We were able to sponsor, by outfitting with school uniforms and supplies, all of the selected nine students who were going on to the high school. Pastor Jerson said it best: "You students are the future of Tonjibe and of Costa Rica." Birmingham First is now part of that future.

Many things were accomplished in the village, but the loving, happy faces of the children will be a guiding light for our return trip next year. Please take the opportunity to talk to the team members about this wonderful experience.
