Book Extravaganza a Big Success!

On June 6, children in the Bound Together tutoring program in Pontiac each received two brand-new books to take home, read and keep. These books were made possible by your generosity in response to our Book Extravaganza held this spring.

During the Book Extravaganza, we collected well over 300 books plus nearly $300 in cash and gift certificates to purchase additional books for these students, many of whom do not own any books of their own.

We received this thank you note from the Bound Together staff:

Each child selected two new books that could be taken home. As one child said, “Do you mean we can keep these books?” For every child, the answer “yes” was followed by smiles and great excitement. The project Book Extravaganza touched all of us at Bound Together as we watched the children select their books. It is with deep gratitude that we thank God for the First United Methodist Church community for your faithfulness and generosity to the children at Bound Together.

Our Church and Society Ministry sponsors tutors each week at the Bound Together program for elementary children in Pontiac. If you are interested in participating, contact Debbie Deal or Nancy Cash.

(From the June 24, 2007, issue of Steeple Notes)

Our church is collecting new books for the students in the tutoring program supported by our church. The students are in the first through fifth grades.

Some of the books will go directly to the young students to keep for their own. Some will go into a lending library for all of them to share. All of the books will support reading and literacy to promote scholastic success.

Adults, youth, and children are all invited to participate. The attached list is a varied one and covers topics such as the family, the arts, and multicultural issues. You may choose a book from the reading list (PDF) or choose one of your own favorites.

Please bring the books to church between March 11 and March 25. We will be collecting books in the Sunday School classes, in Fellowship Hall after Sunday morning services, and in the CLC after Sunday Night Alive. There will be a box for collection in the office during the week.

The love of reading lasts a lifetime. Please join us in this fantastic project.

Sponsored by the Church and Society Ministry.
