Baldwin Center Summer Enrichment
June 16 - August 15, 2008

Looking for a wonderful way to spend your summer helping young children and earning money for college at the same time?

For the summer of 2008, our church will again be hiring interns to work at the Baldwin Center Summer Enrichment Program, a camp for elementary school students in Pontiac, Michigan.

This is a camp for at-risk students in grades 1-5. This year’s camp will have an emphasis on math and science and will take field trips to places like Cedar Point, the Detroit Zoo, a Tiger’s game, and the Charles Wright museum.

Compensation for the summer is $3,100 and, of course, the church will pay the employer’s share of the Social Security and Medicare taxes. Two of these positions are funded by our church's Partners in Mission donations, one is funded by our United Methodist Women, and the fourth is funded by the Church & Society Ministry.

Applicants must be at least 18 by the first day of camp. Preference will be made to those with at least one year of college and to those who are members of our congregation.

These interns work at the Baldwin Center in Pontiac under the supervision of the Center's Summer Enrichment Program director. They act as teacher aides, working with the teachers to prepare and help teach classes like reading, math, science, and computer literacy. Interns may also be asked to teach a class depending on their knowledge of a specific subject. Interns help with arts and crafts, with recess, and with keeping the classroom tidy. Interns help during recess, morning drop-off, and afternoon pick-up. Interns help with field trips and take lunch duty on a rotating basis. Very importantly, the interns interact with children who need a lot of extra love.

Listen to what Caroline Schuerman, one of our interns in 2008, had to say about her summer experience.

Interns will begin with staff orientation, training, and preparation on June 16, camp will begin on June 23, and interns will be done when camp ends on August 15. There will be a week of vacation during July as well as two other holidays in July. See the detailed Calendar and Job Description for more details.

Applications for these intern positions (PDF, Word) were due on April 1 and the job offers were made early in May.

For additional information about these positions, please contact the Missions Ministry Co-Chairs Mary Pickett and Karen Sallee at missions@fumcbirmingham.org or call Beckie Bower in the church office at 248-646-6407 ext 3144.
