A Wesley Group is a small group of 6-12 people who meet regularly for the purpose of connecting in authentic relationships to provide an environment for spiritual group can be focused on book sutdies, videos, group exercises, fellowship, prayer or special interests.
Groups usually meet for about one and half to two hours in homes or at various locations around the church. This fall, the Wesley Groups will be reading the book Called to be a Christian Community by Douglas E. Wingeier. Wesley groups are intended for all adults whether married, single, divorced, widowed, young or old. We hope to form new groups this fall. To join or form your own group, watch Steeple Notes for more information or contact Todd Albery. |
Q: Do I have to be a member of the church or Sunday Night Alive to join?
A: No. Wesley Groups are open to all.
Q: How do I find a group that’s right for me?
A: Contact us. We’ll ask you a few questions about your interests, what times are best for you, and what you’d like to get from a small group. We’ll match you with candidate groups for you to try.
Q: I once tried to join a small group but was told they didn’t have room for me and that I’d have to start a group.
A: How unfortunate! Wesley Groups should have one open chair for newcomers. Please try again. The odds are high that a group is already waiting for you at FUMC!
Q: I’m already in a Bible Study or Disciple Group. Is this a Wesley Group?
A: The answer depends on the size and format of your class or study group. Some follow the Wesley Group format, while others do not.
Q: How often and where do you meet?
A: Wesley Groups meet either weekly or bi-weekly for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Groups meet in homes as well as various locations within the church. Having a host volunteer their home provides the most comfortable environment for small groups. Some groups commit to a finite schedule such as a 6-10 week study, while others continue to meet for years.
Q: What happens at a Wesley Group meeting?
A: Most groups start with a time of socializing which may include sharing a meal or dessert with an ice breaker to get to know more about each other. Next is a time for group study which may consist of a Bible study or some other Christian-based curriculum as agreed upon by the group and its leader. The final portion of the meeting is devoted to caring for the group members through sharing of concerns and/or praise reports, followed by group prayer.
Q: Who can attend a Wesley Group meeting?
A: Wesley Groups are intended for all adults. Church members, non-members, as well as those who’ve never set foot in our church are welcome to join a small group. Married, single, divorced, widows, young and old are welcome. If there is a specific type of group you’re interested in that hasn’t formed, we might be able to find those with similar interests and start a new group.
Q: I have children. What about them?
A: Each group determines how to handle their own child care needs. Some groups share sitters, while, at certain times, you may find child care at the church.
Q: I’m ready to join a Wesley Group. What’s my next step?
A: Reach one of the Wesley Group contacts listed below and we’ll help identify a group that’s a good fit for you.
Q: I’m interested in facilitating or hosting a Wesley Group. How do I start?
A: Contact us and we’ll go through the small group leadership process, training opportunities and requirements with you.
