Becoming an Acolyte
|
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." Lighting candles on the altar represents that Jesus was both a human being and God. This is why many congregations use two candles. The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus' coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of his coming into the presence of the worshipping community.
Acolytes have been a part of the church in one form or another for nearly 2000 years, carrying the light into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus' presence in the worshipping community.
Children are an important part of the life of the worshipping community. Children need to be given opportunities to feel involved in worship, and serving as an acolyte is one way of being involved.
Our church's acolyte program for students in Grades 4-8 is an opportunity for children to provide leadership in the worship service. Acolytes light the candles on the altar at the 9:30 a.m. ,11:00 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. Sunday worship services. Each acolyte typically assists at one worship service each month.
If you are interested in learning more about the acolyte ministry, please contact the CYF staff. |
