Cass
Haunted House
October 2003
The
Cass Haunted House is another wonderful example of how our church
and our Missions Ministry
(with invaluable assistance from our Youth
Ministry, our college students, and our Singles Ministry) "help
people to help themselves." Our volunteers worked arm-and-arm
with the members of Cass Community to build the Haunted House. Then
the Cass congregation members manned it night after night and raised
a significant amount to help homeless children in their neighborhood.
Hundreds of
people have frequented the Haunted House, and hundreds of compliments
have been received. People came from as far away as Toledo, as nearby
as the Wayne State dormitories, and even from a very unlikely source,
The Miami Bar. Constituencies that might never have been attracted
to come to the church building now not only know where the church
is but have met the parishioners and have seen the joy of faith
that can be found in a very rough neighborhood. Equally important,
the Cass Community congregation proved to themselves that they could
marshal a volunteer crew from within their church and truly "make
it happen."
After the November
1st evening at the Haunted House, Rev. Fowler sent this note to
the Missions Ministry:
You wouldn't
have believed it last night. We only had a single break. One woman
was so frightened that she ran out of her shoes. Another one,
scared to death, tackled our "Lust" character and they
both went crashing through a wall.
We got everything
picked up and packed away for safe-keeping today.
All told,
500 people paid to go through the dark and grizzly maze. Our profit:
$2,500 (not too bad for a first time event in the middle of the
Cass Corridor!) Please pass the word on to everyone that the crew
at Cass is already planning next year's House. Thank you for everything.
